French Bulldog Pictures

Early French Bulldog pictures feature this breed as a smaller version of the English Bulldog. Actually, the breed originated from the smaller English Bulldogs culled by the official standard. Those small dogs became very popular among lace workers who left England and settled in France. Their small Bulldogs served as ratters and funny family companions.

Soon, small Bulldogs became very popular among the Parisian "Belles De Nuit." There are many French Bulldog pictures and postcards of the 19th century with images of French ladies with their "Bouledogues Français." Exotic looking dogs brought attention to their owners and served as expensive accessories. In the late 19th and early 20th century, French Bulldogs were the favorites of the nobility, royalty and the artistic set in many European countries. American breeders played a very important role in forming and preserving the breed. The first French Bulldog Club was founded in America. American breeders insisted that these dogs should have “bat” ears, but not “rose” ears.

French Bulldog pictures of nowadays feature small and stocky dogs with a large head, large round eyes, and an undershot bite. French Bulldogs have wrinkles on the face and neck. There is no strict rule concerning the height of purebred French Bulldogs. They are shown in two weight classes: between 19 and 22 pounds and between 22 and 28 pounds. Larger dogs are disqualified from the shows. Some registries don’t set hard and fast weight limits for this breed, but insist upon proper proportion of a dog.

Like all other Bulldogs, French Bulldogs have a short close lying coat. A variety of coat colors and patterns are accepted in this breed except for solid black, liver, mouse, black and white and black and tan. The common coat colors of the French Bulldog are brindle, white, and fawn. Blue and cream are very rare in the French Bulldog. A variety of patterns and dilutions is possible: seal, reverse brindle, tiger brindle, brindle pied, ticked pied, and others. Some fawn dogs have a black mask. When choosing a purebred dog, pay attention to its health and temperament. Those who buy a puppy after seeing attractive French Bulldog pictures cannot be called responsible owners.
