Created for special purposes, this breed has a special appearance that is not natural for a dog. The breed evidently has several physical traits detrimental to the dog’s health. Short muzzle provides for a sure grip, but it causes breathing difficulties; large head is very suited for bull baiting, but it makes labor very difficult. Dogs of this breed are very dependent on their owners and cannot survive if got lost. The life span of this breed is very short: only 7-8 years.

The breed has a long history and the roots of this breed are firmly planted in British soil being mentioned in many written works in history. The dogs have been used as a butcher’s dog to help control oxen. They were successfully used as guards and fighters. The dogs nowadays have a very different temperament from those of their ancestors. The breed is descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff. The development of the breed took place in Great Britain and the name is closely connected with the work the dog used to fulfill.
